Cosmic Eye

I developed the educational iOS app Cosmic Eye (figure), interactively explains the
different scales of our universe. This app was inspired by a history of increasingly accurate graphical representations of the scales of our Universe, including the classical essay “Cosmic View” (1957), the short movie “Powers of Ten” (1977), directed by Charl
es and Ray Eames, and “Cosmic Zoom” (1968), directed by Eva Szasz. Where possible, it displays real photographs obtained with modern objectives, telescopes, and microscopes. Other views are phenomenal renderings of state-of-the-art computer models. This app has been downloaded over 200,000 times.

In mid-April 2016, a youtube movie, generated by the Cosmic Eye app went viral, scoring over 40 Million views on Facebook in just ten days (now over 150 Million), and generating widespread media attention. Some selected reports:

Astrophysics public engagement

  • August 1998: Co-founder of the Swiss astronomical society Antares and its observatory, from where world-class astro-photographs are produced, several of which were featured as NASA’s astronomy picture of the day.
  • August 2015: Public lecture “Journey to the Stars” during the Western Australian science week 2015 with 150 attendees (full house).
  • May 2012: Public lecture “To the Edge of the Universe” during the UWA open day 2012 with 300 attendees (full house).
  • Moderation of a scienti c discussion on the universe with Prof G. Tammann (astrophysics) and Prof G. Schatz (molecular biology)
